Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Overview , Map, Features & Itineraries

Machame Route
Route Overview:

The Marangu Route is the oldest, most well-established, and often the most popular trail to Mount Kilimanjaro's summit. Affectionately known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, it earned its nickname because of the comfort and accessibility it offers compared to other routes. It is the only route with hut accommodations, making it appealing to those who want to avoid camping.
This route provides a classic Kilimanjaro trekking experience with panoramic views, lush forests, and open alpine landscapes. However, it has some unique characteristics — both advantages and disadvantages — that distinguish it from the other routes.

Features of the Marangu Route:

1. Only Route with Hut Accommodation :
Marangu features simple but comfortable mountain huts with bunk beds, shared dining halls, and solar lighting:
- Mandara Hut (2,700m)
- Horombo Hut (3,720m)
- Kibo Hut (4,700m)
This makes it a great option for those who prefer not to sleep in tents, especially during the rainy season.
2. Easiest Trail in Terms of Terrain:
Marangu is often considered the easiest route due to its gradual slope and direct path. There’s no scrambling or steep ascents like on some other routes.
3. Shorter Itinerary = Less Acclimatization:
The 5 or 6-day itinerary means less time to adjust to the altitude, which results in a lower summit success rate compared to longer routes like Machame or Lemosho.
4. Out-and-Back Trail:
Both the ascent and descent follow the same path, which means less variety in scenery. This also makes the route more crowded, especially during peak season
