The Northern Circuit Route is widely considered the best overall route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, especially for those who want the highest summit success rate, maximum acclimatization time, and minimal crowds. As the longest route on the mountain (typically 9 days), it offers a slow and steady ascent, giving your body the best possible chance to adjust to the altitude — making it ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
Starting from the western side at Londorossi Gate, the route begins in lush rainforest before crossing the vast Shira Plateau. Unlike most routes that head southeast, Northern Circuit veers north around the mountain, traversing the remote and wild northern slopes, before merging with the summit route from School Hut.
Trekkers enjoy near 360-degree views of Kilimanjaro, pass through diverse landscapes, and experience less foot traffic throughout the journey. It is the most scenic and quiet route available.
1. Highest Summit Success Rate :
Thanks to the long duration and gradual ascent, the Northern Circuit offers the best acclimatization profile of any Kilimanjaro route,
giving trekkers a very high chance of reaching the summit safely and successfully.
