Nestled in the lush foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro lies the charming village of Materuni, home to the warm and welcoming Chagga people,
renowned for their rich cultural heritage and some of the best coffee in Africa.
This day tour offers a delightful mix of cultural immersion, scenic hiking, and refreshing nature. You’ll start your adventure with a short but scenic drive
from Moshi to Materuni, located about 1,800 meters above sea level. This area is perfect for cultivating coffee, thanks to its fertile soil and ideal climate.
Upon arrival, you’ll visit a local coffee farm where your guide will introduce you to the traditional Chagga 'shamba' (small farm). You'll learn about the complete coffee-making process—from picking the beans to roasting and brewing—before enjoying a cup of freshly made coffee that you helped prepare, Chagga-style!
After your coffee break, you’ll embark on a beautiful 45-minute hike through rolling hills, coffee and banana plantations, and small valleys. Along the way,
your guide will share fascinating insights into local plant life, traditional medicine, and Chagga customs.
As you approach the Materuni Waterfalls, the sound of rushing water builds anticipation. Towering at over 70 meters (200 feet), the falls cascade
into a clear, tranquil pool perfect for a refreshing swim—so don’t forget your swimwear! The chilly mountain water will be a welcome relief after your hike.
You’ll enjoy a delicious local lunch—either as a picnic box or a freshly prepared meal hosted by a local Chagga family. This is your chance to taste authentic Tanzanian cuisine and connect more deeply with the community.
